In my opinion, being a teacher is one of the most rewarding of careers, but it does come with a few drawbacks.
One of those non-perks of teaching is being able to use the restroom at will. Not drinking enough fluids and using the bathroom in a timely manner can and will wreak havoc on a body. Unfortunately this is something I didn’t learn early on in my teaching career. Thank goodness a friend at our local health food store shared their go-to-remedy for bladder issues. So in addition to drinking cranberry juice, I take Mannose D Powder.
I am beginning a list of some of my favorite self-help books. I hope to inspire you to add them to your personal reading collection.
This book showcases the many BENEFITS of READING ALOUD to CHILDREN and is one that I referred to it a great deal when my children were young and still at home. It suggests specific book titles for the different stages of a child’s life. In my professional opinion, I believe this book should be a staple in every household that is raising children of all ages.
These are a few of my favorite quotes from Jim Trelease’s reference guide, THE READ-ALOUD HANDBOOK:
- “Vocabulary and coherent sentences can’t be downloaded onto paper unless they’ve first been uploaded to the head—by READING.”
- “Visual receptors in the brain outnumber auditory receptors 30:132. In other words, the chances of a word (or sentence) being retained in our memory bank are thirty times greater if we see it instead of just hear it.”
- “What we learn in childhood is carved in stone. What we learn as adults is carved in ice.”
- “The more you read, the better you get at it; the better you get at it, the more you like it; and the more you like it, the more you do it.”
- “And the more you read, the more you know; and the more you know, the smarter you grow.”
